Bob Chester Awarded "The Spirit of Bath"
The recipient of the award this time was Bob Chester who works tirelessly, and in a voluntary capacity, on the commercial front and is instrumental in bringing many thousands of pounds to the club each year.
At home fixtures Bob is unlikely to see very much of the match as he is ensuring that the sponsors and any guests of the club, such as children’s groups, are well looked after. However he still manages to engage with supporters in the grandstand and enclosure as he persuades them to buy the programme or Christmas calendar. A few minutes sitting watching the action is interrupted by prompts to the sponsors to choose their man of the match and afterwards it’s his job to ensure that the player concerned is available for photos (taken by Bob!) with those whose day he has ensured has gone so well.
You would think that away fixtures would be a chance to relax and enjoy the football, but Bob is an integral part of the Bath City Internet Radio team, adding his knowledgeable and incisive summaries to the commentary provided for those not at the game.
And Bob is not just busy on matchdays, as he spends his week either at the club or working from home on tasks such as the club lottery, which he recently set up, compiling the weekly club newsletter, contacting local businesses and ensuring that everything is in place for the next home fixture. The community day has become an important event in the season and Bob will work for several months ensuring that there are plenty of groups willing to sponsor the match and ensure that any losses at the turnstiles on the Pay What You Want Day are offset.
Come the end of the season most supporters and players welcome a break but the Summer months are the busiest for Bob, as he appeals for local businesses to support the shirt sponsorship draw, take out pitchside and programme advertising and sign up to sponsor the next season’s matches.
Many thanks, Bob, for everything you do for our club!
The “Spirit of Bath City” award is presented in association with Independent Spirit of Bog Island, a specialist provider of cocktail grade spirits, single malt whiskies, fine wines and a vast selection of world and craft beers, who have kindly donated a bottle of ‘Ninkasi’ craft beer.
If you know someone who should be the next “Spirit of Bath City”, please nominate them via bathcitysocietycommittee@gmail.com.
