City travel to Sutton United on Saturday in the Buildbase FA Trophy 1st Round, hoping to replicate their form in the competition in 2014/15 when they overcame three sides from the level above.
Sutton are back in National League Premier after a 16-year absence, and made a decent start, winning four of their first seven matches. In recent times, they’ve faltered a bit in the league, winning just one of the past eight, and their away record of just one win in 11 is among the worst in the division. It’s a different story in the FA Cup, where they’ve overcome three tricky opponents – Forest Green (2-1 at home), Dartford (6-3 away) and League Two Cheltenham (2-1 at home) to reach round three for the first time since 1994. They’ll face Surrey rivals AFC Wimbledon in January. As the for trophy, they reached the final in 1981, losing to Bishop’s Stortford, and last season were eliminated by Bognor Regis Town, who had also ended City’s dreams of a trip to Wembley.
This is the fourth time the clubs have been drawn against one another in the competition, the most times City have been pitted against the same club since it began in 1969/70. In 1994, despite plying their trade a league below, Sutton hit City for six at Gander Green Lane. They haven’t beaten City at their home venue since. The Romans also haven’t lost to a higher division side in the FA Trophy since 2008, when they were beaten by Torquay at this stage.
Prices for the game at Sutton are as follows: Adults £10, Concessions £5, Under 16's £2 and transfer to the stand £1. Sutton have reduced their prices for this game.
If the game is drawn on Saturday the replay will take place at Twerton Park next Tuesday 13th December with a 7.45pm kick-off
